New material flows need new technologies – how do we leverage the value of side streams?

Wednesday, 20 March, 2024 / 11:00 - 12:00 CET
ZENIT Lounge, Hall 5.2, A-120/D-129

Yes, side streams from food production are being put to good use. But there could be even better uses for them – like using spent grain to make a milk alternative, a process TetraPak recently developed and which they will be sharing about at this round table.

We as an industry are busily exploring the opportunities to reduce our emissions and use of limited natural resources. So the alternative uses of side streams – for uses both in food and other industries, and for higher financial returns – are coming into focus. Join us at this round table for an enlightening exchange on experiences, opportunities and challenges. What biomass do we have available in abundancy? What potential is hidden in it? What technologies can we use to lever its potential? Bring your perspective to the table, discuss ideas and potential solutions, and together let’s forge new alliances for a more circular food industry.

We will jump-start this open exchange with three impulses by

  • Adrian Schmid from TetraPak, on the learnings from their project producing a protein-rich milk alternative from spent grain
  • Prof. Hans-Jürgen Danneel, who is advancing new processes and technologies in the food and beverages industry as Vice Director Institute for Life Science Technologies ILT.NRW at Technische Hochschule OWL
  • Paul Greven, Co-Founder keäksack, a start-up brewing beer from leftover bread will share the special challenges start-ups face – and the opportunities young innovators present to the industry

Moderated by: M Lee Greene, Founder Food Horizons and Co-Founder Strategy & Ecosystem Development Foodhub NRW e.V.
